I hope you guys all had a great weekend! I am sad it was the last weekend of August already – I feel like the summer flew by (it always does!) Thankfully the weather on Saturday was amazing and I squeezed in some end of summer activities.
We headed up to Andy’s parents around noon on Saturday to celebrate his grandma’s 90th birthday! I forgot my camera at work sadly, so all of these photos are taken with my iPhone.
Check out the birthday girl!
I am always raving on about my own grandma, so I should take a minute here to say that Ando’s grandma is doing pretty darn amazing as well. Look how stylish she is with her bling!
I am thankful that both of our grandmas still have their wits about them and are self-sufficient and independent. We are lucky, for sure.
To celebrate his grandma’s amazing birthday milestone, Andy-roo’s parents hosted a barbecue at their house with about 30 members of their family.
Before everyone else started arriving, we lounged around the pool for a bit in the sunshine.
Ando’s ridiculously cute little niece Caitlyn loves to pose for the camera. She also likes to take her own pictures. And her favourite subject seems to be me…
I found about 40 nearly identical shots of the above photo on my phone when I was looking through the pics later. She’s funny.
And she’s really good jumper!
Caitlyn has absolutely no fear, and will just jump right in the water if someone is standing nearby. She is only four and she can swim about half the length of the pool by herself already with no water wings. She is a little fish :). It is so funny to watch her.
Once everyone else started arriving, it was time to break out the appetizers…
I brought a salmon cheese ball (in the first photo) from Eat, Shrink and Be Merry by Janet and Greta Podleski.
It it delicious and a big hit. I’ll put up the recipe for it at the end of this post.
I also taught Andrew’s mom how to make the goat cheese and honey dip!
Also a big hit, like always. Even Ando’s grandma was a fan, and she can be very picky and said she is not a lover of goat cheese. I find that this dip makes everyone a lover of goat cheese!
I definitely stalked the appetizer tables, in between rounds of beanbag toss.
We had a big beanbag toss tournament and Andrewski and I ended up being the winners! No thanks to me our first game… Out of 50 points I seriously only scored 5. Ando carried us that entire game, but I stepped it up in the next two games and held my own! With me actually scoring as well, we kicked some serious beanbag butt :).
Some random backyard shenanigans also went down…
Finally I get a good picture of Andrew’s little nephew Sam. He is not one to ham it up for the camera (unlike his cousin Caitlyn…and his Auntie Lindsey), so he is tricky to catch!
Before long, it was time for dinner. Check out this spread.
Salmon, steak, chicken, sushi, pasta salad, potato salad, and green salad. Everything looked amazing.
I loaded up my plate with some of everything, except for the potato salad.
It was all so good. The steak and salmon were cooked perfectly and were probably the two highlights for me. I wish I was eating that meal again right now…
And then it was cake time!
I obviously scored a big piece of that, along with a few other yummy little treats (shortbread cookies!!!!) that went unpictured.
I love hanging out with A-Rod’s family, and I had such a great time.
Those would be his sisters Catherine and Sharlene. Aren’t they both beautiful? 🙂
And those would be Andreezy’s great uncles (or second cousins maybe?), who are pretty fun as well. You guys know how I feel about adoptive grandpa’s… 🙂
After the party was over, we headed to another one celebrating our friend Bri’s birthday! That was truly when the real partying began, haha. I didn’t have a proper camera though, so in bad blogger form I didn’t really snap any pics. That party lasted well into the morning though, and I was feeling the effects yesterday…
I was thankful that Sunday wasn’t a very nice day. We got tons of chores done around the house, and caught up on PVR’d episodes of our fave TV shows – True Blood, Breaking Bad, and Big Brother. It was a perfect quiet day to follow the craziness of Saturday.
Havin’ a Ball
As promised, here is the recipe for the yummy salmon cheese ball, called Havin’ a Ball!
This is really easy to make. You throw your main ingredients into a bowl and mix it up (I use an electric mixer):
Let it chill in the fridge for a bit while you get your nuts and parsley ready (I used cashews, but I would have preferred to use walnuts – almost any nut will work!). Shape the mixture into a ball with your hands, and roll the ball in the nuts/parsley mix. Done!
I served the cheese ball with various crackers and red pepper strips and cucumbers. Amazeballs.
Question of the day
- What is your favourite party appetizer?
