Dawnald’s Big New Orleans Adventure, Part 2

Gird your loins, my friends!  Dawnald is back to regale you with the second post about her adventures in Southern eating, and this is a good one!

Check out yesterday’s post about her unique eats in N’Awlins if you missed it!

For my New Orleans Post I thought I would create a central theme around the ‘Best of the Best’ because really, they did have some of the best food I have ever tasted in certain categories.

We hopped on the trolley and while we waited, we spotted this interesting individual ‘shoe shopping’ atop the garbage can.

"Do These Match my Outfit?"

We went to the Camellia Grill, which is a restaurant straight out of the 50’s where they serve you at counter top booths and will do anything to make you happy.

Including wearing the glasses of course……..

Anyway, their hamburgers, onion rings AND chocolate milk shake were the BEST I have ever had. They were eaten so fast, no picture was taken. We also found no need to indulge in dinner.

Next up on the best of list, is the beignets served at Café Du Monde. This eatery has been open since the origination of the French Market and they serve one thing and one thing only, beignets. Pronounced Ben-yays. They are these incredible, deep fried, pastries, covered in powdered sugar.

Of course, we also needed to purchase the hats that all of the servers wear. They were a steal at 15 cents each!

Now, the next thing I would like to rave about is not something I have ever had, so I suppose it does not fit in the ‘best of’ category but it did get ingested in N’Awlins and it was DELICIOUS, so here goes.

For those of you have never heard of a Po’Boy, hold on to your knickers. If you are a fan of subs, a Po’Boy is an incredibly fantastic alternative to this and they are HUGE. So if you buy one, you know you have lunch and dinner lined up. They are served on fresh, French bread, with mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, and then whatever else you decide to order; fried shrimp, meatballs, fried or grilled chicken, etc. We went to Johnny’s Po’Boys TWICE because we were told it was the best around. Not only did we find the food scrumptious….

But the service was certainly done with a big ol’ smile……

Finally, we can not talk about New Orleans without discussing Bourbon Street. However, food is not really the highlight of this little treasure. So let’s talk about the best of the bubbly because Bourbon Street has it.

The Hurricane…

The Hurricane is three shots of rum and some crazy, smooth mix, that was made popular by the Jimmy Buffet song, ‘5 O’clock Somewhere’. It is so easy to drink, that before you know it, you have had two…or three. It can make you look like this…….

Or do things like this……

We also have another little beauty that is a Bourbon street fave, called the ‘Hand Grenade.’ I have absolutely no idea what is in that, as it was ordered later in the evening but it tasted almost like Mountain Dew mixed with something. Anyway, they come in these hilarious containers and after polishing off one of these babies, we were ready to call it a night.

In the morning, we had one of those sneaky little guys staring up at us from near the overturned coffee table….

Just look at that sneaky smile, mocking our hangovers.

Anywho, I could write a novel about the food on my trip and get even further into the Cajun, Creole and down home Southern food but I think I’ve given you enough motivation to get your self down to New Orleans and eat, drink and be merry!

And in the spirit of the blog, don’t worry, the fitness room was well used on the trip. Although I must admit, I came home with my pants just a tad more snug 😉 But isn’t that what vacations are for?

Dawnald’s Questions:

  • Do you keep up with your usual eats on a vacation?
  • If not, how do you balance out the fantastic food with keeping fit?

  3. All that food sounds delicious, it’s making my hungry, but that may also have to do with me reading blogs instead of eating lunch right now, lol. I love those glasses, and how people are playing along with them!

  5. No way do I keep up with regular eating on a trip. One of the biggest parts about traveling for me is eating new foods! And not all of them can be healthy.
I figure it is a break from your regular routine, plus you usually walk a lot. I also usually trying to eat one meal healthy per day. And I try to buy some fruit from a grocery store for snacks.
