The Cookies Have Gotta Stop (WIAW, Cookie Edition)

This really needs to stop happening.

You guys know I love cookies. I profess my love for them in about 90% of my posts, I’d say. So even if you just skimmed though my blog without reading anything, there are enough pictures of cookies for you to get the memo that yes, I love cookies.

But seriously, if I don’t stop eating cookies, I am going to be 8 bagillion pounds. The amount of cookies that have made their way into my office recently would make even the Cookie Monster jealous.

I. Can’t. Stop. Eating. Cookies.

This is a really meeting-heavy time of year in our office. We have a lot of committees that meet, and our office is the “corporate office”, so therefore the home base. These meetings typically take all day, and obviously we need to feed the attendees, because who can make an executive decision on an empty stomach?

(source)

No one, that’s who.

We usually order lunch from the same place, and with lunch comes a platter of cookies. Every time. We have had three meetings so far this week (and another tomorrow), which means three platters of cookies.

Sometimes I will piggyback on the lunch. But because I’m not usually in these committee meetings, I kind of feel like a vulture showing up in their boardroom at lunchtime with a plate in my hand. Obviously I am only there for one thing.

So unless leftovers are brought upstairs, I will usually hold back. I do have some restraint (contrary to what some people may believe).

Cookies are another story though.

Today’s lunch was lasagne, and I was quite satisfied eating my leftover chicken noodle soup…

But I knew there were cookies downstairs…and they were calling to me. After I finished my soup, I wandered downstairs into the boardroom to snag a quick little cookie. Sneaking in for a cookie, saying hi to everyone, and ducking back out is no biggie. And one cookie is no biggie.

But once the meeting is over, the remainder of the cookies are brought back up to our office. And since everyone knows about my love of cookies, they are brought into my office. What do you do when someone sets 30 cookies down in front of you and says, “I brought these for you!”

I try to say “Oh no no, I really can’t eat another cookie…” (halfheartedly, fine)

But then they say “Hey, didn’t you run 7k yesterday? You deserve a cookie!”

That’s true. I did. I do deserve a cookie. Or 30?

This is my own fault. I am the one going around raving on to anyone who will listen about how much I love cookies, because it’s true! I love them so much it’s hard to keep quiet about it.

That is the problem. I love cookies so much that I can’t say no to them! If you bring a platter of cookies into my office, I could easily eat the entire platter!

Shmanyway, that is my rant for the day. I don’t know what else to say about that. I ate a ridiculous amount of cookies and then I felt sick. (Note: I am exaggerating when I say I ate the entire platter. That would just be crazy. But it was still too many!)

At least I hit up BodyPump after work to hopefully counteract some of that cookie goodness…or turn it into muscle or something.

Something needs to be done though. I may have to go on a cookie strike or something. I don’t know. One cookie keeps leading to several more, and it has to end!

I’m gonna sleep on it.

And on that note, it is way past my bedtime. Later gators!

PS – I updated my playlists page with my 5k Run for the Cure playlist if you want to check it out! Some good tunes on there, in my opinion.

PPS – I’m almost too late, but Happy WIAW!!! (Thanks Jenn, you are awesome :))

Samesies WIAW (Featuring a Giant Cake)

Helloskis.  I hope all you cheeky cats are doing well!

I took a petite break on the blogging front yesterday to buckle down and get some work done!  I do a 48-page magazine for my organization every three months (like the entire thing, design, layout, most of the photography, and most of the writing), and the entire project takes me weeks.  It has just been hanging over my head for the past little while and I am so glad it’s finally complete and sent to the printers.  A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders 🙂  Hooray.

But I am back today for What I Ate Wednesday!

Other than work stuff, not too much has been crack-a-lackin’ with me the last few days, so you did not miss much.  And I honestly ate exactly the same foods for breakfast, lunch, and mid-morning snack both today and yesterday.

Same breakfast…

Cream Cheese + Jam = the JAM

Toasted whole wheat bagel topped with cream cheese and grape jelly.  Yeah, maybe a weird combo, but SO GOOD!  So good I ate it twice.

Same lunch…

Salad Beast

Beastly salad including lettuce, tomato, cucumber, shredded carrot, green onion, and my black beans and salsa mix leftover from my burritos the other night.  I dressed this puppy up with a bit of Italian dressing.  V filling and quite a groovy yumfest.

And, same mid-morning snack.

Yoggity Snack

PC Strawberry Green yogurt mixed with fresh sliced peach and raspberry.  This has actually been my go-to mid-morning snack for the past week or so.

I have snuck in a few treats as well though.  When Ando arrived home from work yesterday he was all “I have a present for youuuuuu” and held up a big plastic bag.

I love presents and surprises, but in this case I’m pretty sure I just said “Meh,” all disinterested.

Andy-pants works in communications for a company that manufactures cleaning supplies and products, so usually the “presents” that he brings home from work are things like heavy duty paper towels and disinfectant spray.  Please forgive me for not peeing my pantaloons in excitement.

But yesterday he had an event going on, and that is not what he brought home.  This is what he brought me:

Holy Cake, Batman

A GIANT piece of cake.  THAT piqued my interest immediately (because, as you know, I like to eat).  I was pumped as soon as I saw that thing.

That picture is not really doing the cake justice…

Yowza

There ya go.  Now THAT is a piece of cake, my friends.

I wanted to eat the entire thing, but I managed to hold back and just cut myself a “sliver”.

Jusssst a Sliva

This cake was frickin’ delicious.  The cake itself was some kind of banana, but it was the icing that took the (literal) cake!  One of the best buttercream icings I have ever tasted.  I was dying.  And I loved that there was icing in the middle as well.  I much prefer icing in the middle to lemon filling or something.  I don’t want anything tangy messing up the taste of my sweet buttercream.

I kept going back to the cake throughout the evening and snacking on icing.  I couldn’t stay away!  I totally ruined my dinner appetite after that thing.

But here’s tonight’s delicious dinner:

Dinnaaaa

Cheesy taco bake!  Topped with salsa and lettuce.  This is such a great alternative to tacos.  I loved it.

No workouts at all yet this week as I have been trying to catch up work-wise, I have been getting up at 5am just to go into work!  But for the rest of the week I am going hardcore.  Here is my plan of attack:

Thursday – Boot Camp
Friday – 4+ k run
Saturday – Body Pump
Sunday – 4+ k run

Welp, I am off to watch Survivor and catch up on some blog reading.  Have a great night!

Question

  • What is your favourite kind of icing?

Mine is buttercream, hands down!  Love it!

An Amazing Day of Eating

Hello my cheeky food-loving friends!

Yesterday was absolutely, ridiculously, jam-packed with eating.  I cannot believe how much I ate.  I seriously think I am still full.

Allow me to explain…

Around lunchtime I left work and headed downtown to the Incentive Works tradeshow at the Convention Centre.  It’s a show for event planners mainly, so I went with my friend Jess who works for another organization in my building, to see if we could find new companies to work with/score free samples 😉 (my fave thing about tradeshows).

But obviously we needed to grab lunch first!  Our office is not right downtown, so I don’t eat lunch down there often.  We knew we wanted to go somewhere a bit different.

We chose Marché, a Richtree Market restaurant!

I have been a few times before and always LOVE going there.  They basically have every food imaginable, pasta, pizza, sandwiches, sushi, meat station, seafood, salad bar, WAFFLE BAR!!!, etc, all set up in little stations.

Pasta Station

Basically you go around with a tray and a little card, and when you see something you like, you can grab it and give the employees your card to swipe.  To pay, you hand your card to a server and it has recorded everything you’ve chosen.  Pretty cool.

Fresh Juice Bar

The Spanish Paella (rice with vegetables and sausage, in this case) caught both mine and Jessica’s eye.  It looked (and smelled) impossibly yummy.

Paella Station

We both ended up snagging the paella.  It was huge, and DELICIOUS!

Paella Deliciousness

I ended up only being able to finish half of this dish – it was so big and filling.  I actually packed the rest up and ate it for lunch today.  Still yummy the second time around!  I have to recreate for sure.

We also hit up the salad bar.

Salad Bowl

Those are bacon wrapped dates at the front of the bowl, which I had never heard of before!  Am I weird?  Are they common and I am just not in the know?  Because later on I went out for dinner with some other friends and bacon wrapped dates were on the menu!

Anywhoozles, lunch (and my company :)) was fabbity-fab, and afterward, we headed our stuffed selves over to the tradeshow.

We quickly learned that eating lunch was not necessary.  I had no idea there was even going to be food there, but there were TONS of samples.  Seriously enough to make up a meal…maybe two.

And if you’ve read my blog for more than two days, you know I have trouble saying no to free food…

First I scored a yummy little shortbread cookie from this booth…

And then I hit up the Lonestar Texas Grill booth and saw they were giving away their fresh homemade chips and salsa, which I can NEVER say no to.

Just as good as if I were actually in the restaurant.  I die for that salsa.  It is so fresh and delicious.

And then this plate of yummers found its way into my hands.

That would be some sort of goat cheese souffle (amazing), and a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing (!!!!!).

I was ready to burst at this point…but then I saw this:

And I couldn’t say no to a cake pop, obviously.  I have never tried one, and always wanted to!

And then I ran into a girl who I deal with because of my own tradeshow, and she was all “OMG, you have to go to the Niagara Falls booth!  They have real chefs over there and have AMAZING food!”

So, obviously we had to go to the Niagara Falls booth and check this out…

Slider burgers?!  Um, yes please.

The chef topped my little slider with strawberry-rhubarb ketchup and some kind of sweet mustard, with maple cheddar.  Jess and I both commented how we wouldn’t think we would usually go for sweet on our burger, but holy yumballs!  I died for this!  Amazing.  Amazing.

They had some other food kicking around the Niagara booth, but I couldn’t do it.  By that time I thought I was going to explode.  Good thing we walked downtown a lot!

After the tradeshow I met up with my Office Bestie Lexy and some of her friends, and we had some shenanigans planned that included auditioning for a car commercial!  Haha.  It is kind of a long and random story how that came to be, so if anything comes of it I’ll fill you guys in fo’ sho’.

But afterward we went out to eat MORE.

We hit up Joy Bistro, a cute little restaurant not too far from downtown.

I was still so, so stuffed from all my goodies at the tradeshow, so I kept my meal on the lighter side and just ordered an Apple Cheddar Salad.

I know that I have said this about basically everything I ate…but this salad was really good.  It included fresh apple slices, grapes, white cheddar (which was so flavourful), pecans, and a balsamic vinaigrette.

Just like lunch, the company for this dinner was really awesome too 🙂

Dinner Group

After dinner we decided to head down the street to a little ice cream shop that served fresh, homemade ice cream.

What, it’s not like I was full or anything… Who can say no to ice cream?!

I really got a kick out of this sign…

And these cones (the one on the far right in particular)…

Hehe.  Clever.

I ordered a mix of maple walnut and some other kind that I can’t remember the name of right now… But it tasted exactly like a Ferrero Rocher!  Both kinds were very yummy.

After that ice cream, I was DONEZO.  Absolutely donezo.  I never wanted to look at food again.

Until I got home and snacked on some popcorn while Ando and I watched the crazy storm 😉

I loved everything I ate yesterday!  What an amazing day of eating.

I hope you guys all had a great day of eating as well!

A Mexican WIAW (+ Phoebe Run)

Good eve!  It is time for What I Ate Wednesday!

Huge thanks once again to the gorgeous Peas and Crayons for hosting this fabulousness!  I have jumped on the WIAW bandwagon hard.

It’s crazy how quickly the past week has gone, because I feel like just yesterday I was doing my last WIAW!

Welp, let’s get to it.

Besides breakfast today, my meals were pretty Mexican themed.

Non Mexican B-fast

Toasted whole wheat bagel with peanut butter, banana, and cinnamon.  Not Mexican themed, but superly yummy, as per usual, and did the job keeping me satisfied throughout the morning.

For lunch I brought my own salad…but then I heard about a hotel tradeshow downstairs in our building that was serving lunch.  You guys know how I feel about free lunches… Obviously I had to check it out.

And my little salad absolutely paled in comparison to the spread they had set up…FAJITAS!!!

It is rare that I can pass up a good fajita, and today was no exception.  Usually at these tradeshows they just serve sandwiches and salad (also good, no complaints here), but fajitas?!  YES. PUH-LEEZE.

Fajita Fajita

I squeezed so many toppings on my fajita that you can’t even see the chicken and onions, but they are there!  It was pretty big all wrapped up, so I was worried about getting that sucker in my mouth (TWSS), but somehow I managed.  I also scored a little couscous and pepper and artichoke salad on the side, but the fajita stole the show, fo’ sho’.

Just another reason why I love my job…

Dinner came together quite easily tonight, thanks to my lover.

Gird your loins for a new recipe, ’cause it’s a good one!

Soupyyyyy

Slow-Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup!

I topped my soup with crushed multi-grain and flax tortilla chips and sour cream and dug in.  It was like eating Mexico!

Mexican Yumfest

This soup was delicious, hearty, veggie-packed, and a littttttttle bit spicy (you could tone it down, I was having some of the runny-spicy-nose).  It would actually be perfect as a winter dinner, but I am not one to discriminate.  I will put the recipe up at the end of the post!

Immediately after dinner, Ando and I went to Heber Downs Conservation Area for another mid-week hike.

I gotta say, I am loving this summer.  I would much rather be outside, all the time, and it is awesome having someone who will join me :).

We took a new trail, and I was pretty impressed with its coolness.

Holy stairs, Batman!

We also practiced our Phoebe-running style.

We are extremely cool, I’m aware.

I think my run was better.

In the end, we completed about 6k.  Not too shabby, and you bet your sweet nungas I’ll be putting it in my workout log.  I worked up a sweat, especially with the Phoebe run!

Annnd then on the way home we counteracted any schweatiness with this:

I Love Blizzards

Dairy Queen apparently has a new toffee COOKIE Blizzard!  I obv had to try it.  It was pretty good, but I still prefer my fave Turtle Pecan Crunch 😉

I am outta here!  Happy WIAW friends, hope you ate well!

Here is the recipe for the Slow-Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup

I loosely followed this recipe from AllRecipes.com, but I modified it slightly by adding more veggies.  I will post my modified version below.

Slow-Cooker Chicken Tortilla Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 pound chicken (I used three frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts)
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (10 ounce) can enchilada sauce (I used spicy, but if you don’t like spice go for mild!)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chile peppers (I used fresh chile peppers, about 4 of them)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 can low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 package frozen corn (or half of a large package)
  • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 chopped red pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
  • tortilla chips, for garnish
  • sour cream, for garnish

Directions

  1. Throw EVERYTHING in the crock pot.  Cover, and cook on Low setting for 6 to 8 hours or on High setting for 3 to 4 hours.
  2. Remove chicken.  Shred the chicken and put back into pot.
  3. EAT!!!! 🙂

S’laters!

All-You-Can-Eat Sushi WIAW

Hooray for What I Ate Wednesday!

For my WIAW today, I want to highlight my adventures in sushi last night.

I think I should preface this by mentioning that there are few things in life I enjoy more than a GOOD all-you-cat-eat sushi restaurant (some are not the greatest quality, and obviously those do not tickle my tastebuds as much as the really good ones do).

But last night the sushi was a’flowin’ and the sushi was a’goooood.

I hit up Aji Sai in Thornhill with my Bestie Lisa, her mom Diane, her cousins Katie and Vanessa, and her Auntie Kim.  Yep, it was a big fam party and I definitely crashed it.  Anything for sushi, my friends (what, I was invited).

Lisa and I with her Mommers

I love Lisa’s fam.  I have known them since I was like 10, so I consider them an extension of my own fam :).

We went to absolute town with the menu and ordered a LOT of sushi.

I warmed my belly up with a green tea and miso soup…

Both are non-negotiable order items for me.  I lurrrve them, and they prep my tummy for what’s to come.

Next up was the good stuff.

Come to Mama

And nope, that is not all.

Vanessa & the Giant Plate of Deliciousness

Obviously I loaded up my plate several times…

One of my Many Sushi Plates

I also snagged some yummy shrimp and yam tempura.  I have serious love bursts for this stuff.

Tempura Goodness

And then there was dessert… It’s included, obviously you have to go all out at these places.

I ❤ Dessert

A fried banana with vanilla ice cream.  There is nothing like de-healthifying a healthy banana.  Holy yumballs is all I have to say about that.

Ahh I love sushi.  So yummy.  It is a good thing I don’t do this all the time though, or I would be about 300 million pounds.  Probably worth it though…

I am considering this week an extension of my vacation anyway ;).

I had such a great little dinner date with my very bestest and friends.

N'dawww, Besties

Afterwards we dropped by Lisa’s cousin Katie’s condo to hang out for a bit, and to visit with her adorable pugs.

Little Puggy

They are so cute and mischievous.  I totally want a pug now.  I loved how they were down with snuggling, ’cause I’ll snuggle anything with legs if it’ll let me.

Group Shot with the Pugs

I had the ultimate pleasure of meeting the little guys last summer when they were still just babies.

Baby Pugs

I loved them then and I love them even more now.

We were actually dogsitting for Ando’s sister Catherine last night, so I headed by there after to help Alejandrew take care of this little monster.

Bentley, Waiting for his Treat

He’s pretty cute too.  He definitely slept in the bed with us, under the covers between us.  So funny.

I want a dog!!!

I guess I’ll just have to settle for these two cheeky cats for now…

Dexter & Winnie

I do love them a little 😉

Happy WIAW friends!

Some WIAW Action

Gird your loins my friends, it’s time for…

(and thank you to Peas & Crayons for being the brains behind this beautiful eating operation)

Not gonna lie, my eats were pretty stellar today.

First up!

Smoothie-Licious

Breakfast was a portable cup of delicious smoothie that included frozen strawberries, a frozen banana, fresh pineapple, and about a cup of almond milk (plus a little xanthan gum for thickening).

Portable Yumminess

I took this baby to-go, as I had a long car ride ahead.

Downtown Toronto

At least traffic was light!  I headed downtown to meet my coworker Liz, before carpooling to Brock University in St. Catharines.  We have a coaches conference coming up there in the spring so we were just doing a little site visit.

And that is where I scored my lunch.

Big Ol' Stir Fry

A giant chicken stir fry, and the cafeteria had one of those circular grills, so you pick out all your ingredients and they stir fry it in front of you.  Love those.  Why couldn’t my school have one of those?!

Our conference coordinator at the university treated us to lunch, which was a nice surprise.  She really knows the way to my heart and is currently in the running for my favourite person (in the conference coordinating category ;))

It may have been dinner that truly stole the show for me today though…

Quinoa Goodness

Protein-packed quinoa stirfry (I’ll put the recipe up at the end of this post).

I love quinoa more and more each time I eat it.  It has totally replaced rice for me, and it just has a good healthy taste.  With every bite I get the feeling that I am eating something that is so absolutely good for me, and I love it.  Of course it helps that it is tasty.

I Love You, Quinoa

Friends, if you are on the fence about trying quinoa because it has kind of a weird appearance, just buck up and do it.  You will not regret it.  It is fast becoming my favourite easy meal.

I am off to hit the pavement for a run (didn’t happen this morning, whoooops!)  I will see you cheeky minxes later!

Here is the recipe:

Protein-Packed Quinoa Stirfry

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cooked quinoa
  • 1 can any kind beans, rinsed (I used a bean medley that included chick peas, kidney beans and white beans)
  • 1 can green beans, rinsed (you could also use fresh, but I only had canned)
  • half a large red onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup salsa

Directions

1. In a large skillet sprayed with cooking spray (I used olive oil spray, or you could just use a couple teaspoons of oil), add your gaaaahlic and onion.  Cook on low for about 6-8 minutes until translucent.

2. Add both cans of beans, stir, and continue to cook until the beans are warm.

Beannnnnnns

3. Add in the cooked quinoa, stir.

4. Add in the salsa, and stir it alllll together.

Annnnd, deliciousness is born 😉

Stay full, my friends 🙂
